How to Check and Add Transmission Fluid

Checking and adding transmission fluid to your Saturn SL2 is a relatively straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through it:

  1. Park your SL2 on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick, which is usually labeled and located near the back of the engine bay.
  3. With the engine warmed up and running, carefully remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
  4. Reinsert the dipstick fully and then remove it again to check the fluid level. The dipstick will have markings indicating the proper fluid level range.
  5. If the fluid level is below the recommended range, you will need to add transmission fluid. Use a funnel to pour the fluid into the transmission through the dipstick tube. Be cautious not to overfill.
  6. Recheck the fluid level using the dipstick, and add more fluid if necessary until it reaches the proper range.
  7. Once you’ve achieved the correct fluid level, securely reinsert the dipstick and ensure it is properly seated.

  1. When you say 7.4 quarts, does that include the torque convertor because I don’t think the convertor can be drained with the rest of the transmission. Most people will simply drain what’s in the transmission pan and I think that’s much less then 7.4 quarts. You do not want to overfill the transmission with fresh fluid.
